We would like to inform you of a change for this Thursday's Lunch and Learn. Geary Schindel will be our new presenter, and he will be discussing Transboundary Aquifers and the Former Yugoslavia.
Since the breakup of Yugoslavia and the subsequent wars, water has become an increasingly important shared resource that spans international boundaries. Geary’s presentation will explore the challenges of partitioning water resources and the potential conflicts that may arise in the future.
The Balkans, home to some of the most impressive karst landscapes in the world, have unique geographical features, including massive springs, deep caves, and rapid groundwater movement. The region also sits at the crossroads of Eastern and Western cultures, which has historically led to conflict.
Geary Schindel, P.G. is President of Karst Works, Inc., a consulting firm that specializes in groundwater resource management in karst. Mr. Schindel has performed over 500 tracer testing throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries. He retired from the Edwards Aquifer Authority in 2022 where he served in various positions as Chief Technical Officer, Senior Hydrogeologist, Director of Aquifer Science and Director of Karst Initiatives. Mr. Schindel is past president of the National Speleological Society (NSS) and a fellow of the Geological Society of America and the NSS.
